Why Do We Learn? Considering CAD training

I thought I would try and give a little bit of insight into why we learn. I’m not referring to the physical bits, the synapses joining together to form memories which can be accessed at any time. No, I mean the actual motivating elements which gets us up and out of our seats and into a classroom. There are many reasons why we do this, and I will only cover a couple of them in this blog. I will also try and fit a type of learning to each motivation.

School

In the civilised world, we don’t really have the choice in whether going to school or to be home schooled, so I won’t be spending time covering this. I am more interested in when we have a choice in whether we learn or don’t learn, so we begin this a little later in life when we are gainfully employed.

Employee Placements.

A lot of companies today offer employee placements, this commonly comes in the form of the employee doing day release at University or College, helping gain some form of qualification which should be related to their job. I am all for this personally, but again, do many people actually have a choice in this? Especially in the case of apprenticeships, where this will be a stipulation rather than an option. If you get the chance of having this option offered to you, grab it with both hands. In my perspective, you are basically being paid to learn which is Nirvana in my mind.

Wanting new employment.

I have also been told that sometimes people don't stay at the same company for 25 years, as I have. So, if you are looking for a new job, do you even have all the necessary qualifications to even get to an interview stage? This is probably the hardest of all the motivating factors I find to go through. You read the job descriptions, and realise that you are not even close to getting to an interview for the role, so what do you do? You must weigh up whether you want to pay for a course on your own, so you get the necessary qualifications to make your CV pass inspection. It is however a gamble, and quite a big gamble for that. You really need to step back and have a think about your happiness, as well as your future. Is your current job really that unbearable, that you want to open your wallet? Realistically speaking though, unless you are looking for a complete career change i.e Mechanical Engineer to Cake Decorator, I'm not sure that it really is that necessary. You have fallen into a vicious circle that really is the whole point of me writing this article, your current role does not provide you with continuous learning and training, therefore you don’t have the skills to help you get another job. Why don’t you look at it like this, would you be happier in your current role if you got some training? Studies show that employees are much more content in their job roles if they get trained each year, it also demonstrates that the employer values you. If you ask for some training, great organisations will want you to do it.

This reminds me of a story, recently I helped train an engineering company that were really getting hit on productivity, nobody was innovating and basically, they were  operating the same way for the last 20 years. In a management meeting held, the subject of CAD training was raised, which would cost £20,000 for all employees to get some training that they desperately needed. The Financial Director posed the question "What happens if we spend on all this money on CAD training, and all of the staff armed with new skills get up and find another job". The Engineering Director's response in return was.

"What happens if we don't train all of these people and they stay?"

Your employer sends you on a training course

There are two different ways you can look at this, and which one you choose all depends on your outlook on life really.

  1. My employer values the work that I produce and recognises that my skills need updating for me to keep the best productivity, they are willing to spend money on me to aid in me achieving this.
  2. My employer thinks I am not very good at my job and implies I need to get some training, so I am not just taking up desk space, but so I can actually contribute to the company.

What is my answer to this? Am I a pessimist or an optimist? Do you know what? it doesn’t really matter which answer reflects your thoughts.
The result is the same, you get some training. However, the answer to the above question will have a huge impact on how much you will actually learn on the course.
If you attend the training, which your company has paid for, with a defeatist attitude, then know you probably won’t get much out of the training course. I have always maintained that I can teach anyone, whether they are young or old, with an intelligence level of either not so bright or extremely smart, a good teacher can teach anyone.
The one subset of people that I do struggle with however are those who think they know everything. Fortunately, I get very few of these kinds of people on my courses, and inevitably these types of people have just been sent on a course.

If your answer to the above statement was number 1, then you find online learning beneficial, as you will be motivated to actually take the time and use the online resources given resulting in you to get more productive, you would however gain more from attending some classroom training, as the teacher should be able to pitch the training to your level, as well as tailoring the course to put into perspective for your job. If your answer was number 2 however, then a classroom course would definitely be needed. Someone who isn’t motivated to attend a course, will not spend the time to learn from an online resource. They will always be too busy.

Remember every day is a school day!

Why Choose Symetri As Your Autodesk Training Provider?

Training is an investment in yourself, your career, and your future. It is a crucial part of personal and professional development that can help you achieve your goals. Training can offer many benefits, whether you're looking to learn new skills or stay up to date with the latest trends and technologies.

Symetri is an Autodesk Learning Partner. There are several reasons why you should consider using an Autodesk Learning Provider for your Autodesk software and training needs:

The Benefits Of An Autodesk Learning Partner

Autodesk Learning Providers are certified experts in their field, with extensive experience in using Autodesk Software. All our trainers are classified as Autodesk Certified Instructors, and they have the skills and knowledge to teach others how to use Autodesk software. When you are trained by us, you will receive high-quality training based on the most current industry standards and best practices. Additionally, we have access to the latest training resources and tools provided by Autodesk, which enables us to provide up-to-date training to students.

Scheduled, Private And Customised Training Options

Each organisation has different training requirements, so Symetri offers flexible training options, including in-person, virtual, and on-demand training, to accommodate a busy schedule and learning style. This can be in the form of scheduled courses that take place regularly or with company-specific training; you can pick dates that fit you and your organisation.

You can also complement instructor-led training by investing in Pinnacle Series, the e-Learning platform we support.

We can customise training programs to meet your specific needs and goals. The content delivered on the course will be designed by your trainer, who will be an expert in your chosen software and can even use your own models and projects on the course.  If you are encountering a specific problem on your project, this could be the ideal way to learn by working on a real-life example, making sure that your goals are met.

A Range Of Training Facilities Across The UK

Symetri has several training centres in the UK. Classrooms are equipped with PCs and projection facilities, ensuring that the environment you learn in is fit for purpose. All PCs have the latest version of the software you need for your course. For more information about where our Training Centres are based, please click here.

For customer-specific training, you can learn on the same version that you are using in your organisation.

This can be delivered at your site if that is preferable for you. There is also the option of using our Mobile Workstations or gaining access to a virtual machine throughout the course. Virtual Machines embrace the power of cloud computing, delivering the software onto any machine with internet access.  So, if you do not have enough licences for you to use your own machines when training, this solution is available to you.  It could also allow delegates to use machines that are not traditionally powerful enough to run high-end CAD software.

Virtual Instructor Led Training (VILT)

Attending virtual training is more convenient. VILT has a different element to in-person training with real-time chat, polls, and pop quizzes, which brings another way of interacting.  Some people will be more comfortable in their own space and are open to asking questions.

Virtual Training is scalable, allowing colleagues from different offices around the country and other regions to attend the same course.

E-MANUALS

Sustainability is an essential element in our lives and businesses. Therefore, Symetri has decided that all training manuals will be delivered in an electronic format offering several benefits.

  • Easy storage - E-manuals can be easily stored and accessed on electronic devices, making it possible to carry an extensive library wherever you go.
  • Enhanced readability - Text size, font style, and background colour can be adjusted to enhance readability
  • Search function - With a built-in search functionality, it is easy to find specific information quickly.
  • Environmentally friendly - E-Manuals are a more environmentally friendly option as they do not require any paper or need to be shipped around the world, reducing both Symetri’s and our customer’s carbon footprint.

Set and Control Watermarking in Vault Based on the Current State of the File

Watermarking can signify whether the document is a preliminary version, not ready for production or just a document for pre-reviewing a design. A watermark will most likely eliminate the risk that production is done from non-released documents.

Using native Vault functionality, it is possible to add watermarking to DWF files, but only when printing from Vault. However, many of our clients said that they required the same feature based on document level control. With the latest 2022.2 and 2023 releases of the Autodesk Vault Add In, Sovelia Vault, we now have built-in watermarking for 2D PDFs, dwfs and dwfx files.

It has become evident that there were two main scenarios in that customers would use watermarking:

  • When generating a PDF to a network / other business system
  • When viewing data in the vault via mobile and thin clients.

In the first scenario, a PDF may be generated out of vault for use for the shop floor, customer or supplier checks.  These PDFs are not thoroughly checked, approved and released at this point and should not be used for manufacturing. Customers have requested watermarking to make clear the state of this information.

In the second scenario, users may be viewing and downloading data directly from these clients; our customers wanted to ensure that downloaded PDFs were not released and were watermarked to give an element of control. In both cases, watermarking was introduced to allow users greater visibility of the current data state when using these files outside of the Vault system.

Set and control watermarking based on the current state of the file

Sovelia Vault allows administrators to set watermarking based on the current state of the file with control over the text, orientation, location, and colour of the watermark.  Text can be set based on built-up expressions of static text and document properties, allowing administrators to control displayed information.  In addition, Sovelia Vault allows control to enable watermarking on “all states”, a “named state,” or “all states except” conditions, allowing all states to generate watermarking except for a released state as required by many companies.

This new feature was critical to successfully expanding the use of Vault to staff outside of the design team within companies that tested this functionality—driving clearer information to those users and the wider business.

Opening our doors to FREE training – Reflecting on the Excitech training event

I’m Alan Skipp, and I’m the Training Delivery Manager for Excitech. I tend to spend a lot of my time in the office, however, Excitech recently held a training event at our Bishopsgate, London training centre, where I had the pleasure of meet a few of our clients. During his event, Excitech provided a number of free sample training sessions and the opportunity to meet some of our trainers.

Bishopsgate is a terrific training centre in the heart of London and is very popular with our customers. Our aim was to showcase this centre, and more importantly some of our talented people who have been responsible for delivery so much technical knowledge over the years.

We provided twelve one-hour training presentations held in our two training rooms, covering eleven subject matters. At the heart of this were a number of CAD Training courses, including:

The Dynamo session was the most popular of the sessions, so much so that we ended up putting on two sessions. To provide the expertise, we had six trainers on hand, each an expert in their own subject area.

During the day, we also had an opportunity to learn a little more about our own customers, so took time to have a chat. It was great hearing about their individual industries and stories, and to learn about their thoughts on training as individuals and how their organisations see training. It was particularly heartening to learn that in many cases training is embedded as part of their company culture, and classroom training is still the preferred method for the majority of our clients. Furthermore, it was interesting to learn, that many view the “basic training” course as only part of the journey and not the destination, so most saw the value in furthering their skills through more advanced training.

I hope those who attended learnt something new and will visit us again for further training. We have some very talented people here at Excitech who can help our customers effectively use some amazing products and help them with their personal learning journey.

Interested in finding out more? Click here to find out more about our portfolio of CAD training courses which are available in our London centre or any of our other training centres. Or why not enquire about in-company CAD training which can be delivered at a location of your choice.

Convert AutoCAD Drawings To A Shapefile Format

AutoCAD is a great tool to edit and manipulate drawings, but sometimes we need to convert the information contained in AutoCAD drawings to a different format to study it from a different perspective. Being able to interoperate between different applications to take full advantage of their differing capabilities is essential and is part of what I cover in my CAD training courses.

An example of this is the shapefile format, which is used in Geographic Information System (GIS) software. GIS applications are used to edit and analyse spatial information and have many applications in fields like engineering, transport or telecommunications.

The MAPEXPORT commandserves that purpose, however is unfortunately not available in AutoCAD. In order to use it, you will need AutoCAD Map 3D or Civil 3D installed. This command is easy to follow but you need to be aware of the differentoptions  to include all the information needed in the shape files.

I will now take you step by step through a CAD training exercise where we export all the features from an AutoCAD drawing to a shapefile format.

First, type MAPEXPORT in the command line from AutoCAD Map 3D or Civil 3D. In the window that pops up, browse to the path in your computer where you want to store the shape files. Select ‘Shape Multiclass’ in the type drop-down and type a name for the folder that will contain the files. A new folder will be created with this name and the files generated will be stored in it. In this example we are going to call this folder ShapeFiles, as shown below:

You can also select an existing folder, but it is not recommendable because it may conflict with existing ones. You will receive a warning message if you try this, and will then give you the option to append the new files, overwrite existing ones that may exist with the same name or cancel this dialog to be able to change to a different folder.

In the next window, go to the Selection tab and click on the ‘Select all’ option to select all the objects contained in the drawing.

There are2 alternatives for manual selection. If you click on the first icon you can click on the objects in the drawing that you want to include. Clicking on the second icon will open the ‘Quick select’ window, where you can filter the different objects by their type and properties.

You can then add additional filters to your selection by selecting the layers or object classes that you want to include. Notice that an asterisk is included in the Layers field by default, which means that all the layers will be included in the filter.

On the Feature Class tab, select ‘Create multiple classesbased on a drawing object’.

If you want to include some particular attributes in the Shape files, this can be done by clicking on the ‘Select Attributes’ button and ticking the ones you are interested in.

Finally, go to the Options tab and tick ‘Treat closed polylines as polygons’. Other options available in this tab givesthe ability to convert coordinates to a different coordinate system, or to choose between 3D or 3D shape files, by clicking on the ‘Driver Options’ button.

If you click OK, a group of files will be created for each feature, as shown below:

You can now open these files directly in your GIS application or add them directly to the central directory of a ZIP archive. The latter makes it easier tosend the information to a third party if needed.
CAD training is an excellent way to brush up on your skills and provides more accurate and efficient ways of doing things on the software.

Creating Custom Content using Pinnacle Series

Pinnacle Series is an interactive e-learning and productivity platform developed by Eagle Point Software that connects people to the answers they need, when they need them. From Autodesk-specific training to HR processes and procedures, this platform can support a plethora of content, tailored to your organisation’s needs.

Our most recent Pinnacle Series webinar presented the software’s content creation capabilities, and featured Phil Sawyer, BIM and IT Director at architectural practice ADP, a proficient Pinnacle Series user who is using Pinnacle to drive their in-house skills training.
The webinar started with a presentation of the problems that this e-learning and productivity platform can help managers solve. Jeff Rouse, Content Development Manager at Eagle Point Software focused on three challenges that management staff are confronted with:

  • Staff trying to complete work “their way”, often using incorrect methods
  • Teaching staff to use the tools they have
  • Allowing staff to help themselves when encountering a problem, using vetted troubleshooting tools

Another aspect of Pinnacle Series that Jeff presented was the fact that content can be customised to suit the requirements and training needs of different departments. One Learning Path can focus on the Onboarding of New Employees and can include different courses from different departments (Technical, Sales etc.), whilst another could focus on the Fire Exit Procedure. This feature gives Content Managers a lot of flexibility in the way they build workflows for different types of employees.

Jeff’s presentation was followed by Phil Sawyer’s who spoke about how his company – ADP - uses Learning Paths to train staff. According to Phil, “Pinnacle Series is very good to train new people to use new software, allowing them to be productive very early on.” He also emphasised the ability to run quizzes which enable line managers to understand if employees are learning and retaining new information.
